Biography

Keanu Reeves was born on September 2, 1964 in Beirut, Lebanon to Samuel Reeves, Jr. and Patricia Taylor. Keanue is part Hawaiian and his name means "cool breeze over the mountains". Reeves had a transient childhood and moved around a lot. His parents divorce early when he was a child and he moved with his mother New York City in 1969. His mother remarried and was divorced again by 1971 and they moved to Toronto, Canada later that year where he spent most of his youth growing up. Keanu got is start in acting at 15 in a local theater production. He went in and out of several high schools and eventually dropped out to pursue acting.

Reeves started out doing TV in Canada and getting parts in commercials. His first film appearance came with a role in the Hockey flick Youngblood, which was conviently filmed in Canada. He was actually voted MVP of his high school hockey team at one point. Keanu's major break came with the laugh out loud comedy Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure where he plays a California dead head out to save the universe with his equally dim witted friend. Reeves gained the attention of many critics and he was actually offered a role by Oliver Stone to play Pvt. Chris Taylor in Platoon (1986), which won best picture at the Oscars that year. Keanu turned down that job and it went to Charlie Sheen instead.

Reeves career has been marked by several high and low points. He made Speed along side Sandra Bullock in the early 1990s and it was a huge commercial success. Shortly there after he made Johnny Mnemonic and Chain Reaction, both of which bombed at the box office. With his career as an actor in danger of fizzling out he chanced upon The Devil's Advocate and starred opposite Al Pacino and Charlize Theron. His biggest commercial success came with the Matrix franchise which grossed over a billion worldwide. He role as Neo in this cult sci fi series help reestablish his status as an a list actor.

Reeves personal life has been marked with tradegy. His long time girl friend Jennifer Syme, gave birth to a stillborn daughter in 1999. Tragedy struck again 2 years later when Syme herself was killed in an car accident. Many have speculated that this tragedy has had a profound impact on Keanu and has led him to lead a quiet detached life. He does not own a home and has been living out of a hotel. Keanu is an active philantrophist and gives to many charitable causes.
