Biography

Russell Crowe was born on April 7, 1964 in Wellington, New Zealand and was raised in Australia early in his youth. Crowe began his movie career in Australia starring in local TV shows. He started out in the Aussie series Neighbours and Living with the Law. He later starred in some small films and eventually moved to Hollywood, with great success. He had a series of stellar performances that won him critical acclaim and several Oscar nominations. Crowe won an Oscar for Best Actor for his role as a roman general who overthrows a corrupt emperor in Gladiator (2001). He was actually nomiated for best actor for his work in the Insider and A Beautiful Mind.

Crowe has been known to have a temper and has had several public altercations, most imfamous of which was an incident at the Mercer Hotel, a trendy SoHo spot in New York. Crowe threw a broken telephone at the hotel concierge and was charged by the NYPD with criminal possession of a weapon (the telephone). He was also sued in court for phyical damage suffered by the hotel employee, Nestor Estrada. He eventally settled the civil and criminal disputes after making a public apology and paying $100,000 to Estrada.

Russell Crowe was involved with actress Meg Ryan romantically during the filming of Proof of Life. This romance caused a media stir because Ryan was married at the time to Dennis Quaid. He eventually moved on from that relationship and married later on to Danielle Spencer, an Australian singer and actress. The two eventually had a son, Charles Spencer Crowe. Crow spends most of his free time in his home in Australia where he has family and friends.
